A GROUNDHOG DAY STYLE OF RACE
On Sunday, February 5th, the Masonic Building in Zelienople (Home to members of Harmony Lodge No 429) served as the meeting place and registration headquarters for the annual “Get Fit Families – Groundhog Day Prediction Race” of 2023.
Created by founder and award winning certified Triathlon Coach Joella Baker, this unique event bestowed prizes to those participants that correctly predicted their finish times. The runners had the option to enter the 6.66 mile, 3.33 mile, or 1.11 mile race. Everyone that entered received a Jenny Lee Cinnamon Swirl Bread. Furthermore, prizes were awarded to those that dressed the best in a Groundhog Day costume.
The Event was kicked off with the reading of the Groundhog Day Proclamation by Race Officials complete with top hats. A round of cheers and applause followed then all the runners were off to the races.
Event coordinators and volunteers made good use of the facilities well-equipped kitchen by preparing a home-cooked style meal with enough food for everyone. The meal, prizes and an Awards Ceremony followed the race. All of these activities were held in the buildings large Social Hall.
CHARITABLE CAUSE
In addition to the fun and the festivities, a portion of each registration fee will be donated to the ALS Foundation of Western Pennsylvania. Additionally, participants can make a separate donation to support Victory Family Church Food Bank as well as the ALS Foundation.
Also held at the Masonic Building is the annual Get Fit Families Reindeer Race in December. Get Fit Families conduct other multi-sports events throughout the year.
ORGANIZATIONS FOUNDER
Joella Baker, who battled an autoimmune disease (Lupus), is the founder of Get Fit Families, a nonprofit organization in Harmony, PA. The organization provides scholarships for low-income youth to participate in training camps and local races. It also offers youth and adults with various multi-sport training programs.
